The Prophet Balak
Parshat Balak
Numbers Chapters 22:2 to 25:9
Summary
The Moabite King – Balak, hired a prophet named Balaam to curse the invading Israelites. But as Balaam rode out to meet Balak, the donkey he was riding on swerved aside to avoid a threatening angel, visible only to her. Angry at her disobedience, Balaam beat her, but G-d opened her mouth and she protested his unfair treatment. Then the angel became visible to Balaam and commanded him to speak only the words that G-d put in his mouth. Balaam tried to curse the Israelites three times, but ended up blessing them instead.
