Laws in the Desert
Parshat Beha-alotecha
Numbers Chapters 8:1 to 12:16
Summary
In the middle of the desert, G-d defined for Moses the laws for the Levites, for the observance of Passover, and for waging war. The Israelites were tired of their long journey and complained to Moses. G-d ordered Moses to share leadership with 70 elders. In order to satisfy the people’s hunger, G-d sent quail and then a plague. Miriam and Aaron spoke out against Moses, challenging his authority. Miriam was struck with a skin disease called leprosy, and Moses prayed for her healing. The people waited for her to re-enter the camp before continuing their journey in the desert.
