Adam and Eve in the Garden
Summary
When God was creating the world, God saw that there was no one to take care of it, to till the soil. So out of the dust of the earth, God formed the first person, blowing into it the breath of life. The first man woke up, becoming a living being.
God planted a garden in the east, in a place called Eden, and caused many trees to sprout and grow. They were beautiful, bearing edible fruit. God also had two trees grow in the middle of the garden: A Tree of Life and a Tree of Knowledge of Good and Evil.
God then placed the man into the garden and told him that he could eat from all the trees except for one: The Tree of Knowledge of Good and Evil, which was planted in the middle of the Garden. God warned the first man, saying that “if you eat from that tree, you will die!”
God saw that the first man was alone, so God created all the animals and birds out of the earth and brought them to the man so that he could name them. This is how all the animals received their names.
But the Adam (the first man’s name) was still alone, so God made him fall asleep. While he slept, God took out one of his ribs, and created a woman from it. Adam and the fist woman became husband and wife. The two of them were naked, but they weren’t embarrassed.
Now the serpent was the craftiest of all the animals created by God. One day it met the woman and told her that she would not die if she ate from the Tree of Knowledge of Good and Evil. Instead, the serpent said, she would have knowledge of what is good and bad, just like God. She believed the snake and ate from the tree. She liked it so much, she gave some fruit to her husband, who also ate it.
All of a sudden, they realized that they were naked, so they sewed together some fig leaves and made themselves clothes.
Then they heard to sound of God moving through the garden with the wind, and they hid.God called out to the man “Where are you?” Adam said that he had heard God in the garden and hid because he was ashamed of being naked.
God asked Adam how he knew he was naked and if he ate from the forbidden tree. Adam said yes, that the woman God gave to him gave him the fruit to eat.
God asked the woman what happened and she said that the serpent tricked her into eating the fruit.
God punished and cursed the serpent, saying that it shall crawl on its belly, and it would eat dirt all its life. It would be a hated creature. People would try to kill it, and it would try to bite them. To the woman God said that she would be in pain when she gave birth. To Adam God said that he would work hard all his life to grow food. God also said Adam and his wife will die one day, returning to to the dust they were created from.
Adam named his wife Eve, because she was the mother of all the living.
God made clothing for Adam and Eve and expelled them from the Garden of Eden, because they might eat from the Tree of Life, which had been planted next to the Tree of Knowledge and live forever. Since then, no one can enter the garden because there are angels guarding it with a flaming sword to prevent people from entering it.
This is how Adam and Eve were expelled from the Garden of Eden.
