Jacob & Family
Summary
Torah portion: Va-Yechi
Summary: Forgiveness
The word Va-Yechi means “and he lived.” Jacob ( Ya’akov) and his family lived in Egypt for a long time. Ya’akov was 147 years old. He told Yosef that he wanted to be buried in Canaan in the Cave of Machpelah and that God blessed him and his family would continue to grow.
Ya’akov called Yosef’s two sons as he wanted to bless them. Menashe and Ephraim were blessed by Ya’akov and so were his own twelve sons. Then he died.
When we bless our children on Friday nights, we say, “May God make you like Ephraim and Menashe, and like Sarah, Rivka, Rachel and Leah,” Yosef and his family continued to live in Egypt, although they knew they would return to Canaan one day.
This is the last Torah portion in the book of B’raisheet. Chazak Chazak V’nitchazeik.
