40 Years in the Desert
Parshat Masei
Numbers Chapters 33:1 to 36:13
Summary
The forty-two journeys and encampments of Israel are listed, from the Exodus to their encampment on the plains of Moab across the river from the land of Canaan. The Israelites traveled for 40 years from Egypt to the east bank of the Jordan. As they stood at the river, Moses divided the land into sections for the tribes.
“These were the marches of the Israelites who started out from the land of Egypt, troop buy troop, in the charge of Moses and Aaron.” (Num. 33.1)
