The meaning of the word Va-Yeshev is “settled.”Ya’akov has settled back in his homeland of Canaan with his two wives (Leah and Rachel), twelve sons, and a daughter.His favorite son is Joseph(Yosef) – Rachel’s son.
Ya’akov gives his son a beautiful coat with many colors.THis causes a lot of jealousy and hurt feelings among the brothers.They begin to dislike Yosef. One night Yosef has a dream where eleven bundles of grain bow down to one bundle of grain. In his second dream the sun, moon and stars bow down to him. He tells his brothers about his dreams, and they become very angry.
They put him in a pit and sell him as a slave. Ya’akov is devastated, as he thinks Yosef is dead. Instead, Yosef ends up in Egypt in Pharoah’s palace working for Potiphar, Pharoah’s right hand man. Yosef has a special talent as he is able to interpret dreams. He gets into trouble with Potiphar’s wife and is put into prison. In jail,Yosef tells two of Pharoah’s men what their dreams mean, and they come true! Yosef tells them, “Don’t forget about me!”
