The Birth of Moses
Parshat Sh’mot
Exodus Chapters 1:1 to 6:1
Summary
Jacob’s children and grandchildren remained in Egypt for many years and multiplied greatly. The Israelites were enslaved by the Egyptians and were not treated well and Pharoah ordered the midwives to kill all the Israelite boys. They refused to do this.
A son was born to a Levite lady named Yocheved, and she hid him for 3 months. She then put him in the Nile river where he was found and adopted by Pharoah’s daughter, Batya, who named him Moses.
When Moses grew up he went with his brother Aaron to Pharoah and asked if he would let the Israelites go out of Egypt. Pharoah refused and made the Israelites work harder!
