Moses Counts the Population
Parshat Sefer Bemidbar
Numbers Chapters 1:1 to 4:20
Summary
In the Sinai desert, G-d commanded Moses to take the first census. Among the Israelites, there were 600,000 fighting men. G-d then instructed Moses and Aaron to arrange the 12 tribes around the Tent of Meeting when they set up camp and when they marched. The Levites were not included in the census. G-d assigned their duties and the duties of Aaron’s family and taught them how to take care of the Tabernacle.
