Elul School-Rosh Hashana
Rosh Hashanah is the celebration of the Jewish New Year and in English it means “Head of the Year”.
It is on the 1st and 2nd of the month of Tishrei.
Rosh Hashanah is the start of what we call the High Holidays (or The Days of Awe), a ten-day period that ends with Yom Kippur.
On Rosh Hashanah, Jews from all over the world celebrate God’s creation of the world.
We recite special holiday prayers from the Machzor (prayer book for Rosh Hashana and Yom Kippur)
On Rosh Hashanah it is a ‘mitzvah’- a commandment to pay attention to our lives and to listen to the shofar.
